Vacation status on the payslip

Purpose

Read an employee's vacation status from the payslip. At the bottom of the slip are text lines showing accrued hours, used hours and the remaining balance for each holiday year.

Before you start

  • The vacation lines only appear where the company records accrued vacation hours for its employees. If vacation is paid out with wages as it is earned, no hours are recorded and the lines do not appear.
  • The employee's holiday year runs from 1 May to 30 April under the Icelandic Holiday Act. Beyond that, the taking of vacation is governed by law and by the collective agreement that applies to the job.

The lines on the payslip

Line Description
Current holidays year The holiday year in progress. Shows the period along with accrued hours, used hours and the remaining balance.
Previous holidays year The holiday year before it, with the same figures.
Older holidays years Unused balance from holiday years older than the previous one. This line only appears when such a balance exists, and shows the remaining hours only.

An example of how the lines look:

The vacation lines sit at the bottom of the payslip, below the net pay

The three lines in closer view:

Current holiday year, previous holiday year and older holiday years

How the figures relate

Used vacation hours are drawn from the oldest balance first. They consume the older years first, then the previous holiday year, and finally the current one. The Older holidays years line therefore shows what is left once all used hours have been subtracted from the oldest balance.

The same figures for every employee at once are available in the Vacation status report under Salary > Queries.

Where the vacation lines appear

  • On the payslip on screen and in print
  • In the PDF version of the payslip
  • On the electronic payslip in online banking. There the sentence about older holiday years is appended to the line about the previous holiday year, so it appears in the same text field.

Result

The employee can see on the payslip what has accrued, what has been taken and what remains — for the current holiday year, the previous year and older years alike.
